Meet Mr. Wilson

Welcome Mr Wilson to the rescue as one of our ambassadors.

Mr Wilson was donated to the rescue to be an ambassador. He is a 15 year old Percheron gelding who stands close to 18 hands. Mr Wilson can no longer pull a buggy and needs a quieter lifestyle.

We spent yesterday evening driving to Ohio to pick up a couple special equines. The donkey we are calling Flower is only a baby I think she’s a yearling. The Belgian draft, omg what a loving animal, calling him Benji, unsure of his age, definitely need the dentist ASAP for him. They are both thin and stressed.
We believe Benji is under 15 and has scars from a hard life in the fields, he needs around 300 pounds. Flower is sweet and curious but is feral but willing, she needs some weight as well.
What we need is to cover their costs. I will break it down here.
Benji auction fee, $920 with tax and fees
Flower $340 with tax and fees
Dental needs 2 times $75 total $150
Farrier $120
Vetting $200
Both are thin so feed and alfalfa for first 30 days
$130
Fuel costs $385
Total needed to raise is: $2,245
This is only for their first 30 days at the rescue. Their needs are always the most demanding in the beginning. If you have $5, $10, $20 or more to help them gain their health and safety knowing they will NEVER see the inside of an auction again and are safe from the slaughter pipeline, they would truly appreciate your help.

May 28,2022                                                                                                                                      We spent a good portion of the day and all evening at the auction. I was impressed by the caliber of horses being auctioned off. Most were high dollar horses going to private homes. Except for one that slipped through the cracks, so to speak.
Meet Rowan, she’s a 15 year old mare in so so condition. Was said she rides, but not today. She was led through the auction for some behavioral issues, so the auction owner wouldn’t allow his riders to ride her.
After the auction was over, we spent a little time with her, she does seem very sweet. She needs about 200 pounds, dental, farrier, worming, and I’m pretty sure she needs treated for ulcers by what we were told how she reacted to being cinched.
We paid $600 for her, $50 for coggins and I think $100 to the auction. What we need is $1,000 to help cover her costs and her vetting. We will hit the ground running with her this week. I really think under all that rain rot, we have a very sweet lost mare that just needs some tlc and someone to take care of her.

Trinket

13 year old pony mare loves to jump. Just picked her up she will be going into quarantine with the other mare for a minimum of 30 days. Both of these mares need a lot of weight.

Nellie

New intake mare around 18. Looks like a bad case of EPM.

One of our volunteers was contacted about this mini donkey that was living with goats and started being mean to them and the owner wanted him to leave asap. She went to meet him during her lunch break, contacted me and said we needed to get him out of there. The owner was feeding him a heavy scoop of medicated goat feed. FYI that’s not good for donkeys or any equines.
Danny and I hitched up after tending to the 16 horses here at the house. Upon arrival figured out quickly this little guy is feral. He’s only 2 years old, owner had bought him as a weanling to protect her goats. That backfired and to add insult to injury he doesn’t know how to lead, he doesn’t know what another horse or donkey is, never been seen by a farrier, well you get the point. Fortunately, he’s in excellent shape and his hooves aren’t horrible.
We have renamed him Zeke. Vet has already been contacted to geld him. We are going to give him a few days to settle in before we start working with him.
After Zeke is utd on shots, farrier, dental, and gelded, he will be available for adoption. Thank you Stephanie for making sure Zeke had an amazing life ahead of him.

This video shows you what a kill pen is like. Taken during one of our trips to pull horses.

What is Rocky's Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation ?

Rocky's Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation is a 501c3 non-profit horse rescue ( EIN# 46-5656223) located in Thurmont, Maryland. It is run and cared for with a 100% volunteer staff.  We rescue equines from all over the United States to give horses, donkeys, and mules a soft place to land after being abused, neglected, or thrown away at an auction to the highest bidder. We also assist in helping horse owners find a new home for their horse if we are unable to take them in to the rescue.

Our goal as a rescue is to rescue , evaluate , rehabilitate , and find them forever homes.  This process can be easy or difficult depending on the needs of the animal rescued. Many of our equines are adopted out to live their lives happy in their forever home. However, some of the equines we rescue can't be homed and these equines will live out their lives at our Sanctuary.  Most of our horses, donkeys, and mules can be found on the "Our Horses" tab above.
